IRIS GOLDBERG
I was born in the USA and raised in Israel, in a reality where forces
of life and destruction are equally present. Buried in sounds, smells
and gestures, these forces shaped the quality of my artistic expression.
My artwork examines the emotional and physical boundaries of highly
charged abstract forms. I am interested in the narrative evoked
by these choreographed forms as they expand and contract on a two
dimensional surface. Drawing precedes painting in my art. The drawing
serves as an extension of my breath, setting up a kind of dance
that pulsates across the surface. I work directly onto the canvas
attached to a bare wall, which allows me to feel the physicality
of my gesture against the wall’s resistance.
My background in dance influenced my interest in mark making, as
a way to evoke the kinesthetic language of the body. My recent work
embodies my focus on the investigation of movement and music their
impact on gestural marks. This fusion of visual art, movement and
music echoes my philosophy of interdisciplinary artistic expression
as a way to deepen the understanding my work. I have been collaborating
with music ensembles, creating works that are both visual, physical
and temporal fueling richness and desire for more collaboration
from both worlds.
